Silico® Technical Calculator

Silicone Emulsion Active Content & Batch Calculator

Plan a silicone emulsion batch, calculate water dilution from an existing stock, or estimate the active silicone delivered at a formulation dosage. Enter the active-content value stated in your product technical data sheet (TDS) to calculate on a consistent mass basis.

Calculate your emulsion mix

Use mass percentages from the same TDS basis. Results update when you calculate.

Plan a target batch

Calculate how much supplied emulsion is needed for a target batch and active content.

Example value only. Use your product TDS.
Active content in the final batch by mass.
Final total mass, including the supplied emulsion and all additions.

Batch calculation

Ready
Supplied emulsion required
25.00 kg
Water to add*75.00 kg
Active-content mass equivalent10.00 kg
Supplied emulsionWater / other additions

Example only. Water is calculated as the remaining mass when water is the only additional ingredient.

Calculation basis: Results are mass-based, not volume-based. “Active content,” “silicone content,” and “total solids” may describe different measurements. Enter only values that use the same definition, as stated in the relevant TDS. If your formulation includes ingredients other than water, subtract their masses from the calculated water allowance.

How the silicone emulsion calculator works

This calculator supports three common mass-balance tasks for water-dilutable silicone emulsions: planning a target batch, diluting a known amount of stock, and estimating the active content delivered by an application dosage. It provides a theoretical starting point; it does not predict emulsion stability or application performance.

01

Plan a batch

Enter the stock active content, target active content and final batch mass. The calculator estimates the supplied emulsion required and the remaining mass available for water and other additions.

02

Scale a dilution

Enter the mass of stock emulsion and the target diluted active content. The calculator estimates the final mixture mass and the water needed when water is the only diluent.

03

Check active dosage

Convert the as-supplied emulsion dosage into an estimated active-content dosage, or calculate the supplied-emulsion dosage required to reach a target active level.

Formulas used

1. Required emulsion for a target batch

Emulsion mass = Final batch mass × Target active content ÷ Stock active content
Water allowance = Final batch mass − Emulsion mass

Use active-content percentages as fractions in the calculation. For example, 40% is 0.40 and 10% is 0.10. The water allowance assumes no additional ingredients other than water.

2. Dilution from a known stock mass

Final diluted mass = Stock emulsion mass × Stock active content ÷ Target active content
Water to add = Final diluted mass − Stock emulsion mass

3. Active content delivered in a formulation

Active dosage (%) = Supplied emulsion dosage (%) × Active content (%) ÷ 100
Required emulsion dosage (%) = Target active dosage (%) ÷ (Active content (%) ÷ 100)

Worked example: dilute a 40% active emulsion to 10%

For a theoretical 100 kg batch with stock active content of 40% and target active content of 10%, the calculation gives 25 kg of supplied emulsion. If water is the only addition, add 75 kg of water to reach 100 kg total mass. The batch contains 10 kg of active material on the stated active-content basis.

This example illustrates the mass balance only. It is not a product recommendation or a confirmed specification for any Silico® grade.

Important technical considerations

The result should be checked against the selected product's technical data sheet and your process conditions. Emulsion type (such as cationic, anionic or nonionic), water quality, pH, temperature, mixing order and the compatibility of other formulation ingredients can affect dilution stability. Oppositely charged emulsions or additives should not be assumed compatible without testing. For reactive silicone emulsions, verify the manufacturer's handling and compatibility guidance before dilution.

For volume-based batching, first confirm the product and water densities at the relevant temperature. Do not treat kilograms and litres as interchangeable. Use a small-scale compatibility test before transferring a calculated dilution to production.

Frequently asked questions

What does active content mean in a silicone emulsion?

Active content is the stated proportion of material considered active under the supplier's defined test or specification. Its exact meaning can vary by product. Check the TDS to confirm whether the reported value is active silicone, silicone content, non-volatile matter or total solids before using it in a calculation.

Is active content the same as total solids?

Not necessarily. Total solids or non-volatile matter may include silicone, emulsifiers and other non-volatile formulation components. Use the same property definition for both stock and target values, and do not substitute one measurement for another unless the supplier confirms they are equivalent for that product.

Can I use this calculator to calculate litres?

The calculator uses mass balance in kg or lb. To estimate volume, use verified density data for the actual emulsion and diluent at the relevant temperature. Density and volume contraction or expansion can make a simple mass-to-volume conversion unsuitable for some formulations.

Does the calculated water amount guarantee a stable emulsion?

No. The calculation only balances mass and active content. Stability may depend on emulsion chemistry, water hardness, pH, temperature, mixing procedure, preservation requirements and other ingredients. Confirm compatibility with the supplier and test the intended dilution before production use.

Which silicone emulsion should I use for my application?

Choose the emulsion based on the substrate, required effect, ionic type, compatibility, process conditions and product specification. Review the Silico® Silicone Oil Emulsions range or contact the technical team with your application details for product-specific guidance.
