Silico® Hydrophobic Fumed Silica

Silico® hydrophobic fumed silica is made by chemically treating hydrophilic fumed silica with reactive silanes or silicone oils, such as chlorosilanes, HMDS, or PDMS. This treatment gives the silica excellent water repellency, making it non-dispersible in water.

Silico® hydrophobic silica is widely used in silicone adhesives and sealants, silicone elastomers, coatings, inks, composites, personal care products, and fire extinguishers. It helps control rheology (thickening, anti-sagging, anti-settling, thixotropy) and enhances strength.

In polar systems like isocyanate, epoxy, silicone, polyurethane, and vinyl ester resins, Silico® hydrophobic silica offers strong thixotropic effects and reinforcement without excessive thickening.

It also improves water resistance in cosmetics and enhances powder flowability. Silico® products provide excellent storage stability and are effective as anti-settling and anti-sagging agents for pigments.

How to Choose Hydrophobic Fumed Silica

Selecting the right hydrophobic fumed silica depends on key factors:

  1. Surface Treatment: The treatment (e.g., HMDS, DDS, PDMS) affects hydrophobicity, dispersion, and compatibility. For example, HMDS-treated silica is great for polar systems, while PDMS-treated silica enhances thixotropy.

  2. Particle Size & Surface Area: Smaller particles with higher surface areas provide better thickening and reinforcement.

  3. Polarity Compatibility: Choose silica that matches your system’s polarity for better dispersion and performance in systems like epoxy and polyurethane.

  4. Application Needs: Determine if you need thickening, anti-sagging, or reinforcement. Silico® FS2110 excels in thixotropic behavior.

By considering these factors, you can choose the best hydrophobic fumed silica for your needs.
