Silico® Hydrophilic Fumed Silica
Silico® offers a range of hydrophilic fumed silica products with varying surface areas. The high-purity hydrophilic fumed silica is produced through the hydrogen-oxygen flame hydrolysis of volatile chlorosilanes.
From a chemical perspective, the loose white silica powder is composed of high-purity amorphous silicon dioxide. Hydrophilic silica particles, upon contact with water, become wetted and disperse in the medium. These silica particles exhibit excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, and thixotropic properties.
Silico® is a trusted manufacturer of organosilicon products, with its fumed silica widely used in adhesives and sealants, silicone elastomers, coatings and inks, composite materials, personal care cosmetics, and fire extinguishers. Silico® fumed silica is utilized for rheological control (thickening, anti-sagging, anti-settling, thixotropy) and reinforcement (strength enhancement). Silico® fumed silica demonstrates excellent scratch and abrasion resistance, flowability, anti-caking properties, corrosion resistance, and enhanced adsorption.
Silico® also provides hydrophobic fumed silica powders that can be used to thicken non-polar solvents such as xylene, styrene, and mineral oils. When fumed silica is dispersed in non-polar liquids, the silanol groups on the particle surfaces interact through hydrogen bonds, forming a bridging structure. This results in a three-dimensional network that provides thickening effects.

How to Choose Hydrophilic Fumed Silica?
When selecting hydrophilic fumed silica, consider the following factors:
Surface Area: Higher surface area (e.g., 300 m²/g) improves thickening and reinforcement, while lower surface area (e.g., 100–150 m²/g) is suitable for moderate rheological control.
Particle Size: Smaller particles (7–40 nm) improve dispersion and flow properties.
Purity: Choose silica with ≥99.8% SiO₂ content for high purity and low levels of impurities like carbon and moisture.
pH Value: A pH range of 3.6–4.5 indicates optimal dispersion and compatibility with various systems.
Application Needs: For transparency, choose higher surface area silica; for moderate control, lower surface area suffices.
Align these properties with your application for optimal performance.
