Polydimethylsiloxane Description
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a widely used silicon-based organic polymer that is optically transparent and known for being inert, non-toxic, and non-flammable. It is the most common silicone polymer, utilized in various industries, including microfluidic systems, caulking agents, lubricants, and contact lenses for biomicroelectromechanical applications.
In its liquid form, dimethylsiloxane is classified as silicone oil—a colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and non-volatile liquid. When in solid form, it becomes silica gel, a hydrophobic, inert material that is also non-flammable and a transparent elastomer.
